Eastern Nepal remains a hidden gem, largely undiscovered by tourists. It is blessed with a pristine nature that remains untouched by external influences. Some parts of the Kathmandu valley, including some villages and towns, have yet to be explored. Contrasting with the frequently visited regions, these unexplored towns, villages, and communities are a haven where you can encounter breathtaking landscapes, witness unique lifestyles, and connect with remote communities.

Dhankuta is a hill town that offers a stunning view of Himalayan peaks on a fair day. It is known for its warm hospitality and observing the rural lifestyle. Visit Cholung Park, which displays traditional Limbu community houses. Get to know the indigenous Aathpahariya community of Dhankuta in Khambela and Sipting with Dhol Nach, along with the conventional snacks. It is an ideal destination for people seeking a peaceful retreat and witnessing traditional music and dance performances.

Visit Janakpur, founded in the early 18th century atop the ruins of the ancient Videha dynasty capital; it is a revered religious centre in Nepal. The city's temples, notably the Janaki Mandir, dedicated to Goddess Sita, showcase stunning Hindu-Koiri Nepali architecture. Experience Mithila art and local cuisines at Mithila Thali by Chef Santosh Shah, Master Chef.

Travel to Panauti Community Homestay, a successful women empowerment model and women-led community homestay. Here, you can experience being part of a family and learn about their daily lifestyle. Explore Panauti with a bike tour around the ancient Newari town, dress up in the local attire, and cook traditional Newari food with the host family.

While returning to Kathmandu, a brief stop at Kirtipur, an off-the-beaten-path Newari town, is a must with its historical treasures hidden in its narrow alleys. Local experts will introduce you to the ancient art of writing in Ranjana Lipi script using bamboo pens and ink on canvas paper. Enjoy traditional Newari refreshments and dishes like Sagun and Samay Baji. As the writing and feasting conclude, take away your framed Ranjana script as a special keepsake.

ITINERARY

Day 01: ARRIVAL

Activities: International Airport Arrival Transfer, Sound Healing and Dinner at Avata Wellness
Accommodation: Traditional Comfort or Similar

Welcome to Nepal!! As you exit baggage claim/customs on arrival at Kathmandu Airport, there will be a security check who will be collecting your baggage tag. Please note that there are trolleys available at the airport which are free to use.

As you walk down the tunnel to the arrival lounge, you will find many people showing various placards and waiting anxiously. Please do not get confused and look out for our airport representative who will be amongst the crowd waiting to welcome you with your name written on the placard. Our airport representative will assist you with your vehicle.

You will be received with a placard having your name in the arrival hall. The luggage will be loaded in the car and you will be transferred to the hotel in Kathmandu.
After check-in, you can take the time to freshen up before you move to Avata Wellness, for a sound healing session to recover from the jet lag. Avata is one of the best wellness centers in Kathmandu with a serene environment, trained practitioners and instructors.

Sound healing is an ancient practice that uses vibrations from instruments like singing bowls, gongs, and chants to promote well-being. Rooted in Himalayan and Tibetan traditions, it aims to restore balance by harmonizing the body’s energy centers.

The sound healing is followed by an orientation dinner at Nourish by Avata.

Thereafter, you will be transferred back to your hotel.

Day 02: DHANKUTA
Activities: Flight to Biratnagar, Drive to Dhankuta
Drive Duration: 3-4 hours approx.

Following breakfast, you will be transferred to the airport for your flight to Biratnagar. On arrival at Biratnagar Airport, a vehicle will be ready to transfer you to Dhankuta. Dhankuta is a charming hill town in eastern Nepal known for its rich mix of ethnic communities, traditional houses, and vibrant local markets. Surrounded by tea gardens and lush hills, it offers a peaceful escape with panoramic views of the Himalayas. The area is also a cultural gateway to eastern Nepal, where visitors can experience authentic Rai and Limbu heritage.

Once you are checked in at the Hotel Murchunga, which is located close to the main bazaar area, take a brief orientation walk around your accommodation to get to know your surroundings better. Afterwards, you will have time to yourself to rest for the day.

Hotel Murchunga offers a welcoming stay in the heart of Dhankuta, blending simple comfort with local charm. Rooms are clean and airy, with lovely views of green hills and terraced farms. The friendly staff go out of their way to make guests feel at home, serving tasty, freshly prepared meals with local flavors. It’s an ideal base to relax after exploring Dhankuta Bazaar or nearby hiking trails, providing a peaceful atmosphere that lets you soak in the natural beauty and slow pace of this hill town.

Day 03: DHANKUTA
Activities: Sunrise at Dhoje Danda, Cholung Park Visit, Orange Town Walk
Hike Duration: 3-3.5 hours approx.
Accommodation: Hotel Murchunga International or Similar

Wake up early in the morning where you will be going for an easy short walk to Dhoje Danda. Renowned for its spectacular sunrises and sunsets, this tranquil hilltop provides a serene escape amidst the natural beauty of eastern Nepal. On a clear day, you will be able to see the Makalu, Kumbhakarna and Kanchenjunga ranges from the hill top. You will be ascending steep uphill stairs before you reach the viewpoint of the sunrise. After breakfast, you will be driving to Cholung Park- which celebrates the rich history and heritage of Limbu community. You will see a lot of the Limbu community’s traditional houses, and the small museum displays ancient manuscripts, coins, and tools.

Shortly after, you will be going for a walk to observe the orange city, architecture of the Newari and Aathpahariya communities and the nearby Ganesh Temple and Nishan Temple which holds a significant religious importance for locals and visitors alike. During this walk, you will also learn about local efforts to preserve heritage through architecture and traditions, and how the diverse ethnic community has come together to preserve their cultures.

Day 04: DHANKUTA
Activities: Chuliban- Khambela Hike, Transfer to Sipting, Cultural Feast at Sipting Community Homestay
Drive Duration: 30 mins approx.
Walk Duration: 1.5- 2 hours approx.
Accommodation: Hotel Murchunga International or Similar
Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

After breakfast, start your day with a short drive to Chuliban- a scenic hill where you can observe Dhankuta, then hike onwards to Khambela. On the way, you will be visiting a view tower where a great view of the Tamor and the Kanchenjunga ranges can be seen on a clear day. You will also find scattered houses along the way, which all belong to the families of the indigenous Aathpahariya community.

Khambela, a hillside village in Dhankuta, is home to the indigenous Aathpahariya community, offering visitors traditional organic meals served on leaf plates and showcasing the effort to sustainable practices, such as rainwater harvesting and spring revival, which have significantly improved local livelihoods.

On arrival, you will be welcomed by the Aathpahariya community at Khambela, followed by a warm local lunch while getting to know them better. After a short excursion, you will drive back to Dhankuta for a visit to Kachide. In the early evening, you will participate in a farm-to-table experience with the hosts. Pick your own ingredients directly from the nearby garden and prepare your dinner for the night together with the hosts. The hosts will guide you to make dishes from scratch.

In the late afternoon, you will be visiting another Aathpahariya community located at Sipting Community Stay. Followed by a warm welcome, you will be treated to delicious local snacks and their signature drink. In the evening, the locals will come together and you will be joining in the Dhol Nach showcased by the Aathpahariya community in Sipting Community Homestay. You will end the day with a cultural dinner that the locals have prepared, featuring their traditional snacks and drinks.

Day 05: JANAKPUR
Activities: Drive to Janakpur, Dinner at Mithila Thali
Hike Duration: 8-9 hrs approx.
Accommodation: Mithila Yatri Niwas or Similar

Today you will be travelling to Janakpur, where the Janaki Temple and Mithila Art is a massive highlight. It is sacred city famed as the birthplace of Goddess Sita, and its serene ponds, bustling bazaars, and strong Maithili culture make it a unique blend of devotion and tradition.

Janakpur isn’t just about temples—it’s a vibrant center of Maithili culture. As you explore, you’ll come across colorful Mithila art adorning walls, streets, and even rickshaws, showcasing the community’s artistic traditions and storytelling through intricate patterns and symbolism.

Once you arrive, you’ll check in at your hotel and unwind. To end the day, you’ll enjoy a traditional dinner at Mithila Thali by Chef Santosh Shah, winner of MasterChef: The Professionals – The Rematch in 2021. His dishes bring a refined twist to age-old Maithili recipes, offering you a delicious and memorable introduction to Janakpur’s culinary heritage.

Mithila Yatri Niwas offers a comfortable and culturally rich stay in Janakpur. The rooms are simple yet clean, decorated with touches of local Mithila art that give a warm, welcoming feel. Guests appreciate the friendly staff who share stories about the city’s heritage and help arrange temple visits or local experiences. The on-site restaurant serves tasty local and vegetarian meals. It’s the perfect spot to unwind after exploring Janaki Temple, local ponds, and the colorful streets of Janakpur.

Day 06: PANAUTI
Activities: Mithila Painting, Transfer to Panauti Community Homestay
Drive Duration: 6-7 hour approx
Accommodation: Panauti Community Homestay
Meals Included: Breakfast, Dinner

Following breakfast, experience Mithila Art, where intricate designs, vibrant colours and distinctive art techniques grab the attention of the viewers from afar with the artisans. This ancient folk art features intricate geometric patterns, natural motifs, and mythological narratives painted with colours prepared by the artisans from a few base colours.

After that, You will continue moving towards Panauti Community Homestay. The hosts will be ready to welcome you on your arrival. Panauti is a mix of old towns full of Newari architecture and temples. Going to the outskirts, you will find modern houses surrounded by farm fields. The women-led homestay of Panauti has been a leading example for many community homestays across Nepal.

Panauti Community Homestay open their homes to share traditional cuisine, stories, and customs passed down through generations. Explore medieval temples, narrow brick alleys, and vibrant markets with your host as guide, gaining an insider’s view of Newari culture. The rooms are simple yet clean, with a mix of Western and squat-style shared washroom facilities used by both guests and the host family. It’s an immersive cultural journey where genuine connections are made over shared meals and conversations.

Day 07: PANAUTI
Activities: Panauti Bike Tour, Cultural Program
Bike Tour Duration: 3-3.5 hours
Accommodation: Panauti Community Homestay
Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Shortly after breakfast, enjoy a bicycle tour of the countryside and ride through three indigenous towns: Panauti, Bhandari gaun and Khopasi. Explore small temples, peddle through potato fields, and cross a suspension bridge. And try a cup of Nepali masala tea before you head back to the old town of Panauti. The tour will be led by a seasoned guide from Panauti Bike Station- a ripple effect of the success of Panauti Community Homestay.

In the evening, the hosts will help you dress like locals so you can be ready for a cultural program put together by the younger generation and feel free to add in your flair during the celebrations.

Day 08: KATHMANDU
Activities: Drive to Kirtipur, Ranjana Lipi and Aila Experience, Transfer to Kathmandu
Drive Duration: 1 hr 45 mins approx.

With a warm farewell from your hosts at Panauti, you will be traveling to Kirtipur. Kirtipur is one of the oldest Newari towns in Nepal. Home to the Newari community, enjoy local Newari food, catch views of the mountains and Kathmandu Valley, and visit the city’s many temples and stupas with the hosts.

Shortly after, you will learn to write an ancient Newari Script, Ranjana Lipi with an experienced instructor. Taste a local alcoholic drink ‘ Aila’ while you are learning to write the letters and also enjoy a Newari Set meal, Samay Baji. This meal is a ‘must have’ in festivities for the Newari Communities. You will be writing using traditional bamboo pens with ink along with enjoying delicious Newari cuisine. At the end, have a word of your choice in Ranjana script framed as a special memento.

Your evening ends back in Kathmandu at Traditional Comfort or a similar heritage-inspired hotel, offering a calm and cozy retreat after a day immersed in culture and creativity.

Day 09: DEPARTURE

As per airlines regulation, travelers need to check in at their respective airlines counter at around 3 hours before the scheduled flight time.

Your booked airport transfer will be at your hotel, ready to take you to the airport. Depending upon the traffic on the road, the drive from your hotel to the airport may take around 30 minutes or more.

At the airport, security will check for your flight ticket - either hard copy or on your mobile along with your passport before you are allowed to enter the departure hall.

While staying at hotels in Nepal, guests can expect a wide variety of meals ranging from traditional Nepali dishes to popular international cuisines such as Indian, Chinese, and Continental. Most hotels offer buffet breakfasts and à la carte options for lunch and dinner, prepared by professional chefs with a focus on comfort and flavour. Depending upon the lunch place of the day, especially while you are on an excursion, the guide may suggest you some delicacies. The quality of meals prepared may not be of the quality like you may find in big cities of Nepal but they will be delicious and hygienically prepared.

At community homestays, meals are a warm and authentic part of the cultural experience. Guests are served freshly prepared home-cooked meals made with locally sourced ingredients. Typical dishes include dal bhat (lentils and rice), seasonal vegetables, pickles, and sometimes local specialities of the destination. Meals are often shared with the host family, offering a deeper connection to local customs and everyday life.
