Harvest, Cook, and Dine with Locals

Overview

Step into the daily rhythms of a Nepalese homestay with the Everyday Farm-to-Table Experience. This immersive activity lets you harvest fresh produce from a local garden, prepare an authentic meal, and connect with your host family. Beyond cooking, it’s about creating shared memories and learning the culinary traditions that define Nepali culture.

“Responsible tourism in Dhankuta is being implemented through the HI-GRID Project, supported by the Australian Government and led by ICIMOD. This initiative is a collaborative effort between Dhankuta Municipality, Chhathar Jorpati Rural Municipality, Community Homestay Network, Smart Paani, and HUSADEC.”

Description

Begin your experience with a warm welcome from your hosts, accompanied by a cup of traditional Nepali tea. After settling in, head to the nearby vegetable garden, where you’ll pick fresh seasonal ingredients for the meal. Along the way, you’ll learn about vegetables and spices and even pick up some Nepali vocabulary.

Back at the homestay, enjoy a hands-on cooking session where you’ll wash, chop, and prepare the ingredients with guidance from your hosts. Engage in lively conversations about local spices, traditional recipes, and the culture that shapes Nepalese cuisine.

As the meal comes together, savour the joy of sharing stories, laughter, and culinary secrets. Finally, sit down with your hosts to enjoy the fruits of your labour—a hearty, home-cooked dinner. Leave with a full stomach, recipes to try at home, and memories of an evening steeped in culture and tradition.
