Overview
Immerse yourself in the vibrant culture of the Tharu community with a hands-on experience of traditional wall painting at Barauli. This engaging activity introduces you to the artistic heritage of the Tharu people and allows you to create these stunning murals using natural pigments. It is a perfect opportunity to connect with local traditions, learn creative techniques, and contribute to communal artwork.
Description
The Tharu wall painting experience begins with a fascinating introduction to these murals' history and cultural importance, and a craft passed down through generations in the Barauli community. You'll learn about the unique natural pigments made from locally sourced ingredients—such as rice flour for white, vermillion powder for red, and coal for black—and even assist in creating these colours. Afterwards, you'll be guided to apply these pigments to the wall, using traditional techniques and adding your own flair with your hands and vegetables to create beautiful Tharu designs.
This activity is a communal event, often conducted during Tharu festivals, where community members, especially women, come together to paint the walls of homes and spaces. By the end of the session, you will have contributed to a lasting piece of art and leave with colourful memories in the form of vibrant handprints and photographs.
