Where Nature Meets Local Culture

From Recovery to Renewal

Nagarkot Community Homestay, tells a story of resilience and renewal. The community began welcoming guests in 2011, but the devastating earthquake of 2015 destroyed many homes and livelihoods. Through community tourism, however, local families found a path to rebuild—not just their houses, but the future of the community. In 2017, Nagarkot Community Homestay became part of the Community Homestay Network, further strengthening their capacity and visibility as a community-led tourism model.

Today, Nagarkot Community Homestay stands out not only as a sustainable alternative in a hill station filled with hotels and lodges, but also through its vibrant identity. Houses dedicated to homestays are painted yellow, creating a warm, welcoming charm that sets them apart and makes it easy for travelers to spot where community hospitality lives.

Where is Nagarkot?

Located just 27 km from Kathmandu, Nagarkot is a serene hilltop village famed for its panoramic Himalayan views. Perched at an elevation of 2,175 meters (7,136 feet), it offers sweeping vistas of terraced fields, lush forests, and the distant Himalayan peaks. The mild mountain climate keeps summers pleasantly warm, while winters are cool and crisp, often with crystal-clear skies. Average temperatures range between 15–25°C in summer and 2–10°C in winter, making it a comfortable year-round retreat. The best months to visit are from October to April, when the skies are clearest, and the farming cycle fills the hills with activity.

Your Stay, Their Story

Nagarkot Community Homestay carries the spirit of resilience at its core. Having endured both the devastating earthquake of 2015 and the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, the community stood together and chose tourism as a way forward. Today, they welcome guests not as individuals but as a united community, sharing their homes, traditions, and hospitality.

Earnings from the homestay are not limited to the families who host; a portion goes into a community fund that supports local development projects—ranging from education to community infrastructure. In a hill station better known for its hotels and resorts, Nagarkot Community Homestay has become an inspiring example of how community-led, sustainable tourism can thrive. The family was amazingly kind. The views were absolutely fantastic. Food was good--organically grown on their farm. Room was clean and had 24 hour electricity. They have WIFI. Western toilet, and a shower. Family was friendly and wanted to help us out. We were transported in a comfortable car that came on time, and even just a little early. All in all just a wonderful stay.

The experience in the Nagarkot homestay was truely amazing. The Bastola family is lovely and made me feel like home. To experience how local Nepali farmers live and be part of the community is a one in a lifetime opportunity. I also had a great time hiking to the waterfall and the Buddha temple on top of the mountain. The view is stunning. I can highly recommend the homestay in the Nagarkot community.

What an incredible experience to be welcomed into somebody's home for a few days, and being able to witness their lifestyle from up close. Communication was a bit of an issue when Raja was not around (my fault for not learning some rudiments of Nepali), b
